Natural Methods For Treating Anxiety Disorder

The truth of the matter is that for many people who are experiencing one of the common anxiety disorders (generalized anxiety, panic, social and specific phobias, OCD, PTSD), traditional "medical" treatment approaches may not be the best or most effective solution to their condition. There are many alternative methods for treating anxiety disorder that often times get overlooked.

For instance, research studies have demonstrated that in many cases treating anxiety disorders through cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) yields success rates equal to or even better than prescription medications, without the side effects associated with anti-depressants and anti-anxiety drugs. Panic disorder, phobias and OCD are particularly receptive to the conscious reconditioning techniques involved in CBT.

Catnip Plants

General anxiety disorder is unfortunately somewhat less treatable with CBT, since it is less focused on particular triggers or situations that can be consciously re-directed or desensitized. So people with GAD who want to avoid prescription medications may be particularly interested in exploring some of the alternative or natural methods that have been tested or recommended for anxiety.

Natural treatments for anxiety fall into take three main groups-mind/body work, stress-reduction or relaxation techniques, and herbal and nutritional remedies.

The physical manipulation of massage therapy and shiatsu can ease anxiety symptoms by reducing muscular tension, thereby alleviating stress and improving sleep. Breathing exercises, physical exercise, yoga and tai chi operate synergistically on both body and mind to reduce stress and are frequently recommended for anxiety. Self-hypnosis, meditation, and biofeedback also combine mental and physical interactions to control or reduce anxiety symptoms.

Many herbs also have significant anti-anxiety effects. It's important to note that many of these herbal remedies should not be combined with prescription drugs or with other central nervous system depressants including alcohol and barbiturates.

Kava (or kava kava): Recent research using a water-soluble kava extract found that "As measured by standardized anxiety and depression questionnaires, the participants reported much less anxiety when they were taking the kava than when they took placebo pills...the evidence supports the use of this [formulation] for short periods for acute anxiety and stress." Long-term use is more questionable, however, since kava formulations using the whole kava plant, instead of just the root, or using acetone and ethanol to extract the active ingredient from the plant instead of water have been found to harm the liver, and it's not yet tested whether the water-soluble extracts are free of this risk.

Valerian: Valeriana officinalis has been tested in clinical trials and shown to relieve anxiety rapidly, often in less than an hour. Valerian is a sedative and muscle relaxant sometimes recommended for insomnia, though some people actually experience an opposite reaction, find that Valerian stimulates them instead of relaxing them.

Green tea/theanine: The amino acid L-theanine contained in green tea reportedly "stimulates the production of alpha brain waves, creating a state of deep relaxation and mental alertness similar to what is achieved through meditation. Second, L-theanine is involved in the formation of the inhibitory neurotransmitter, gamma amino butyric acid (GABA). GABA influences the levels of two other neurotransmitters, dopamine and serotonin, producing the key relaxation effect." Since the amount of L-theanine contained in green tea is actually relatively low, separate theanine dietary supplements may be more effective than green tea.

Some other herbs that have been found to have at least some anti-anxiety effects include California poppy, hops (approved in Germany for the use of anxiety, restlessness, and sleep disorders), passionflower, lemon balm (sedates and relieves tension headaches), lavender, chamomile (soothes digestion as well), and catnip.

Many people who are troubled by nagging anxieties may be able gain control of their symptoms without drugs through some or all of these alternative treatment methods. Customize your own natural holistic treatment approach by trying them and combining the ones that you find most helpful-perhaps starting with some changes in your diet and nutrition, making some lifestyle changes such as exercising regularly, trying some herbal medicines and also psychological counseling or therapy to learn some of the more demanding relaxation and biofeedback techniques.

6 Resources for Grieving the Loss of a Pet

There's no rulebook for grieving a pet. Your loved one was as unique as your grief over your immeasurable loss. It would be wonderful to simply follow the Kubler-Ross five stages of grief model, moving quickly through denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. Instead, your journey will be your own maze of feelings and actions. Luckily, there are so many resources to help you with the loss of your pet. Here are six ways to both mark the passing of your beloved animal and deal with your grief.

1.Call a pet loss specialist. When talking to friends and family isn't helping alleviate your sadness, reach out to a pet loss specialist. Here are a few of the numerous hotlines awaiting your call:

Catnip Plants

·The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) Pet Loss Hotline: (877) GRIEF-10.

·Cornell University Pet Loss Support Hotline: 607-253-3932.

·Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine Pet Loss Hotline: 1-(866) 266-8635 or (509) 335-5704.

2. Create a special memorial. Find the perfect place for your pet's urn or special photograph. Decorate the area around it with a fitting tribute, whether that means placing a framed poem, a favorite pet toy, a statue, or a weekly bouquet of flowers in this spot.

3. Help your children. Talk to your children about how they feel and share how you feel with them. Let them know there is no right way to grieve and that you are there for them. There's no need to stop their tears or insist that they talk about every emotion. Simply sitting with them while they emote is helpful. Books can help as well. Check out The Tenth Good Thing About Barney by Judith Viorst and Paw Prints in the Stars: A Farewell and Journal for a Beloved Pet by Warren Hanson.

4. Plant a tree or memorial garden patch. Create an area in your own yard to memorialize your own pet. Choose a fitting plant, tree or group of flowers, from catnip or a sheltering oak tree to bright Gerber daisies. Or buy a tree through TreeGivers ( http://www.aspca.org/donate/ ), an organization that will plant a tree on public lands in whatever state you choose.

5. Make a Memorial Gift. Donate in your pet's name to an organization you love, whether the group is geared toward helping animals or humans. Click on "Memorial Gifts" to donate to ASPCA on this organization's donation ( http://www.aspca.org/donate ) page.

6. Read a book. Often, a self-help book that focuses on losing a pet can help you with your grief. A novel or non-fiction book that features a delightful pet or animals can also help you acknowledge and deal with this sad life change. Here are a few recommendations:

·The Loss of a Pet: A Guide to Coping with the Grieving Process when a Pet Dies by Wallace Sife, Ph.D.

·Coping with Sorrow on the Loss of a Pet by Moira Anderson Allen.

·Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World's Worst Dog by John Grogan.

Getting Ready to Adopt a New Kitty?

Going to adopt a new feline friend? Do you have everything you need before kitty arrives? Have you cat proofed your home for the new arrival?

There are many things to consider before adopting a new cat. Some of the necessities are cat litter, litter pan and scoop, food and water bowls, food formulated for the age and health of your cat, cat furniture and lots of toys. Consider as well, that your cat will need regular vet visits and spaying or neutering is an expense that is a must.

Catnip Plants

Let's start at the beginning. When bringing a new cat into your home (especially a kitten), take a look around your home from a cats point of view. Dangling electric cords, toxic plants, and delicate collectibles should be removed before your new friend is brought home. Cats are enticed with things that dangle. Electric cords are dangerous items that kitty will be interested in. If you have plants, make sure they are not poisonous to cats and remove those that could be harmful. Knick knacks could possibly be broken should your new fur baby accidentally knock one off of an end table. Cats love to play, it's their favorite thing aside from sleeping. Provide your new friend with toys intended for play or they will find other things to play with.

Prepare a small cardboard box with some cat toys in it for kitty to play with. Some cats prefer mice toys, some prefer ball toys, and some are crazy for toys that dangle from a stick or plastic pole. Until you get to know your cat better and determine his or her favorite toys, there are toys that you can buy that are relatively inexpensive yet allow a variety of things for kitty to play with. Bulk cat toys can provide your new fur baby with a variety of toy balls, mice that rattle, mice that don't rattle, toys with catnip in them or without catnip in them and many others to choose from. For not a lot of money you can get a good selection of different cat toys. Place all the new toys in the cardboard box and show kitty his or her very own toy box. It won't be long and you will see your new friend go to the toy box and select a toy to play with. Observation of this behavior will tell you which toys are the favorites. Stock up on the favorite toys but also introduce new toys to peak kitty's interest.

Keeping kitty busy playing with cat toys prevents them from playing with things that are not intended to be toys. Things such as bobby pins, rubber bands, safety pins, etc. are not things that your cat should be playing with. When your cat has plenty of toys to play with, he/she will be amused for hours and not be tempted to look for other things to play with. Don't be surprised to see kitty fall asleep clutching a favorite toy. Cat toys are a definite must for your new feline friend.

The 7 Worst Plants If You Have Kids Or Pets

There are certain plants you just don't want to mess with. It is not worth the risk if you have pets or kids in your yard or home. Here is a list of poisonous plants that I would not feel safe with my kids and pets being around.

1. Rosary Pea is arguably the most poisonous plant known to man. It's scientific name is abrus precatorius. The seed is where the poison is located in the plant. This plant is a vine and can look woody at the base of the plant. This plant is naturally found in tropical locations, but like most plants can thrive in a kitchen window garden.

Catnip Plants

2. Azalea. All parts of the azalea plant are poisonous, although rarely fatal. Symptoms can be nausea, vomiting, and breathing problems. This is a very popular plant throughout the U.S. and I would guess that most people do not know how dangerous it can be to pets and children. My neighbor planted an azalea and was shocked when I told him how toxic they are to those who are in the habit of stuffing their mouths with plant material.

3. Angel's Trumpet. This is also called brugmansia. All parts of this shrub or small tree contain enough poison to be lethal if ingested. Kids and pets have been known to chew on parts of this plant. Contact with the eyes can cause issues as well. Some counties have outlawed the plant altogether.

4. Daffodil. The bulbs of a daffodil are poisonous, to the point of being fatal. Ingesting the stems or leaves can cause nausea and a host of other problems including headache and blurred vision. Handling daffodils can cause extreme dryness and scaling of the hands.

5. Foxglove. Every part of this plant is poisonous causing heart and digestive trouble to the point of death. This popular herbaceous shrub, also called digitalis, is native to Europe, Asia, and Northwest Africa. It made its way to the U.S. where it continues to reek havoc.

6. Holly. This holiday favorite can add diarrhea and vomiting to your wintertime fun. Holly is a tree or shrub that can grow up to 25 feet tall. Some species are deciduous and others evergreen. It is the berry of the plant that is toxic to people, although some species of birds thrive on them. So in summary, if you like birds more than people, grow a lot of holly.

7. Lilies. Most lilies are poisonous, with cats feeling the most pain, although human ingestion can cause serious renal failure. I don't understand the hypnotic draw of cats and kids, but keep the lilies out of your yard if you have either. Some owners of annoying cats have reported their neighbors lining the perimeter of their properties with lilies soaked in catnip.

Why Cats Flip For Catnip

If you've ever watched as a cat "flipped" over fresh catnip perhaps you've been struck with the question; "what causes Catnip to affect cats that way?" Catnip is indeed an unusual phenomenon among cats, it has the ability to alter your cat's behavior like nothing else can. So what exactly is the reason for what scientists have coined as "the Catnip effect"?

Unfortunately for such inquisitive minds the exact reason of why Catnip affects cats in such a manner remains mostly a mystery. There is however much that we do know about Catnip and cats even if we don't have the ultimate answer of exactly "why?" yet answered.

Catnip Plants

The Science Stuff

Catnip is scientifically classified as Nepeta cataria and is a perennial herb from the mint family and is in fact also referred to as "Catmint". It is a plant indigenous to Europe but has been exported and is now found all over including the United States and Canada.

The active ingredient in Catnip is an oil; Nepetalactone, which is found in the leaves of the plant. This is the reason you are able to find Catnip in a bottle or spray form in some pet stores.

Other Uses For Catnip

Catnip is not only good to stimulate activity in cats, it can also be used by humans as an herb for a medicinal tea which may soothe toothaches, help against coughs, and may also perform as a sleep aid. Furthermore, Catnip can be used as an herb on salads or other foods as has been the case for centuries in France. Lately Catnip has also been garnering favor as a natural insect repellant rivaling the effectiveness of many store bought varieties of repellant.

Catnip and Kitty

Catnip affects approximately half of all cats. What determines whether or not a cat will react to Catnip is a genome that is inherited (or not inherited as the case may be) at birth. Kittens, regardless of whether or not they carry this genome, do not react to Catnip until reaching about 3 or 4 months of age and becoming sexually mature. Older cats are also more likely to have a diminished or non-existing reaction to Catnip, which leads scientists to believe that the Catnip effect is based at least partially on sexuality and that the reaction may be something like an aphrodisiac. Further adding to this belief is the similarity of a sexual pheromone found in the urine of the male cat to nepetalactone (the active product in Catnip).

Cats that can be traced to regions where Catnip is not indigenous appear to be unaffected by Catnip. The domesticated housecat is not the only cat that may be affected by Catnip. Larger cats can also be affected by the Catnip effect, felines such as the bobcat, lynx, tiger and even lion are known to react much the same way the common housecat would. It is interesting to note that while Catnip can act as a stimulant when a cat sniffs it, it can conversely act as a relaxant if ingested. Therefore, you may see a different, nearly opposite result depending on whether your cat chooses to eat the Catnip you provide for him/her or merely sniffs it (the latter being the more typical behavior).

How to Use Catnip With Your Cat

Catnip can prove to be a very useful tool for a few common problems with your cat. If you are lucky enough to have a cat that does react favorably to Catnip then here are a couple of ideas for you and your furry little friend.

Catnip and Lazy Cats:

Catnip can be used to get a lazy cat off his or her butt. Some cats are notoriously lazy, choosing to sleep much of their day away in a nice golden patch of sunlight on the living room carpet, only waking up to eat and gather some necessary attention from their indulgent owners. If this sounds like your cat, you may soon see (if you haven't already) that your cat is becoming more and more round. This is generally not a good thing. Catnip may be able to help. Presenting catnip to your cat encourages activity (of course provided the cat sniffs rather than eats the herb).

Many adult cats will respond to Catnip in a manner that resembles their childlike kitten hyperactivity, jumping, playing and running around as if it was given an injection of kitty adrenaline, which in essence, is the case. The effect of Catnip on a cat can last somewhere between two and fifteen minutes. If the latter is the case, then this is a decent amount of exercise and will help keep your cat a little more svelte than without a Catnip treatment. Furthermore, if you leave the Catnip out for a few hours then your cat may return to the herb later (an hour or two after the effect has worn off) and again react in an energetic fashion. So in this sense you may consider Catnip sort of like a kitty energy drink.

Catnip and Cats That Scratch Furniture:

If you have a cat that seems bent on the destruction of your furniture then Catnip may again be able to come to the rescue. Cats can be frustratingly picky about just about anything under the sun including where they want to sharpen their furniture destroying claws. It is not uncommon for a cat to damage or destroy a piece of furniture just because the owners finally gave up on trying to redirect their cat to the unused cat scratching post that set them back anywhere up to a hundred dollars and more. A good way to attempt to change this frustrating and expensive behavior is to rub some Catnip or Catnip oil on a scratching post that you are attempting to get the cat to use. Introduce your cat to the newly "Catnipped" scratching post and see how he/she reacts. If all goes well, your cat will sniff and inspect the post and then begin clawing at it. After a few times (you may have to re-Catnip the post) hopefully kitty will be trained to use the post rather than the sofa.

Using Catnip with Multiple Cats

If you've never used Catnip before and you have more than one cat it is advisable to try it out individually on each cat before introducing it to all of your cats at the same time. The reason is because Catnip affects some cats in a negative manner causing the cat in question to become aggressive rather than merely playful. Introducing it to your cats individually enables you to control the situation and keep a cat that may react aggressively isolated from your other cats. This of course means avoiding a possible catfight that could result in broken furniture, hurt kitties (possibly requiring a vet visit), annoyed neighbors (and probably owners), or a combination of all of the above.

Growing and Keeping Catnip

Growing your own Catnip can be rewarding as it can save you money, give you the satisfaction of doing something yourself and ensuring that you always get fresh, high-quality Catnip for your cat. A word of caution however; the exact kitty reaction you want to grow your own Catnip is something to be wary of. If you plan on growing your Catnip out of doors and other cats can access your Catnip garden then be prepared for unwelcome feline visitors. This may not be a problem for you personally, but cats are by nature territorial and if you have a cat that lives alone without the company of other cats this could prove to be an area of stress for your cat. Even if you keep your cat inside at all times, your cat may get agitated if he/she looks out the window to see another cat frolicking in territory your cat considers his or her own. If you choose to grow your Catnip indoors, be careful to keep it out of reach of kitty. Otherwise you'll likely have Fluffy jumping up on furniture even to the most out of the way place to get access to the tempting herb. Cats are great jumpers and not really known for respecting precious household knick-knacks. So if you do decide to grow it indoors for a cat that reacts to Catnip, be careful to grow it in a place that your cat won't be able to access it. A room that you always keep closed to the cat is probably the best solution for indoor grown Catnip.

If you do find that your cat reacts positively to Catnip you should be sure to use it sparingly so as not to dull the effect which can be the result of overexposure. A good rule of thumb is to not treat your kitty more than once a week on average to Catnip.

Given all the positive effects that Catnip may have on your cat you owe it to yourself (and naturally your fluffy little ball of affection) to see how he/she reacts to this strange and well known herb. It will provide enjoyment and exercise for your cat and most likely an entertaining show for yourself as well. It's a win win situation.

Mosquitoes in Your Garden? Try Planting These

If you are a serious gardener, you spend lots of time outdoors. And, for sure, you would rather be tending your plants than swatting mosquitoes.

While there are many things you can do to keep mosquitoes away, there are some plants that will beautify your yard and help repel mosquitoes.

Catnip Plants

As one more way to keep mosquitoes away from you and your yard, try planting these attractive plants.

HORSEMINT

Horsemint has a scent similar to citronella. Horsemint grows wild in most of the Eastern United States, from Mexico, Texas up to Minnesota to Vermont. It is partial to sandy soils and will grow in USDA Zones 5-10. Native Americans used it as a treatment for colds and flu. It has natural fungicidal and bacterial retardant properties because it's essential oils are high in thymol.

ROSEMARY

This wonderful herb we use for seasoning is also a great, natural mosquito repellant. It has been used for centuries to keep pesky mosquitoes away. Rosemary is a native of the Mediterranean, so it likes hot, dry weather and well-drained soil. It is hardy in USDA zones 8-10, and must be grown as a pot plant in colder climates. If you happen to live in a part of the country where rosemary does not grow, you can get a good quality rosemary essential oil; mix 4 drops with ¼ cup olive oil. Store in a cool, dry place. When it comes to fresh plant oils as natural mosquito repellants, there is every reason to have the plant in your yard, if they will grow in your area. It is an inexpensive and attractive way to boost the appearance of the landscape and have natural mosquito repellants on hand as well.

MARIGOLDS

Organic gardeners have used marigolds as companion plants to keep aphids away. Mosquitoes don't like its scent any better (and some humans feel the same way). Marigolds are sun-loving annuals that come in a variety of shapes and sizes for almost any landscape. They are quite easy to grow from seed.

AGERATUM

This charming little bedding plant contains coumarin, and mosquitoes detest the smell. It is used in the perfume industry and is even in some commercial mosquito repellants. Don't rub ageratum on your skin, though. It has some other less desirable elements that you don't want to keep on your skin in quantity. Ageratums are annuals, and the come in a muted blue and white that compliments most other plantings.

MOSQUITO PLANTS

There are two types of plants that are called mosquito plants. One is a member of the geranium family that was genetically engineered to incorporate the properties of citronella. Citronella only grows in tropical places, but it is a well known repellant for mosquitoes. This plant was created to bring the repellant properties of citronella into a hardier plant. It will grow where any geranium will thrive. Many have questioned its usefulness as a mosquito repellant, but it is attractive enough to warrant planting for it's ornamental value.

The other kind of mosquito plant is agastache cana. Its common names include Texas hummingbird mint, bubblegum mint, giant hyssop, or giant hummingbird mint. As you might guess, hummingbirds are quite attracted to it.

It is a New Mexico native, also found in parts of Texas. It is, in fact, a member of the mint family and its leaves do have a pungent aroma when crushed. In its native habitat, it is perennial, and is usually hardy in USDA Zones 5a-9a. It blooms late summer to early fall, so it catches hummingbirds on their annual migration. The long, medium pink flowers reel in butterflies as well.

CATNIP

One of the most powerful mosquito repellant plants is ordinary catnip. Recent studies have shown that it is ten times more effective than DEET at repelling mosquitoes. It is a short lived perennial throughout most of the United States. It is easy to grow from seed, and quickly reseeds. Aside from its intoxicating effects on cats, the leaves make a very soothing tea.

With all of these plants, the leaves must be crushed to release the aroma. Otherwise mosquitoes can't smell them. And, with rosemary and catnip, you can simply crush a few leaves and rub on your skin and clothing to enhance the effect.

So, next time you are revising your plantings, consider using some of these attractive plants to do more than just enhance the landscape. You can have pretty ornamentals that also drive mosquitoes away.

Make a Simple Medicinal Indoor Herb Garden

Make an indoor medicinal herb garden to have your own year-round supply of herbs, for medicines, food flavourings and lovely aromas. Incidentally, the aroma in herbs derives from oils in the cell of the plants. So, a herb garden is not that difficult to make, and gives great satisfaction to adults and children alike.

Begin by selecting a suitable container, as large as possible within your home. You can use different materials including plastics, but the most recommended are clay, wood or ceramic pots. You can use many containers placed around the house, preferably in areas near windows, all of them with a different kind of herb.

Catnip Plants

Around autumn/fall time is the best time to divide grown herbs such as mint, sage, chives, and parsley, placing some of them outdoors and one or two as part of your indoor herb garden, bringing plants indoors prior to the frost period. Please, remember that young perennials like bay, sage, rosemary, can be destroyed by a harsh, cold frost, so they are best grown in pots and brought inside in winter.

When growing herbs in dry climates, supplemental watering is necessary, but not in temperate parts of the world, because excess of water could harm the plants or promote worms. A good quality, compost, from your own garden or bought can be used. Herbs aren't fussy about their soil and very often grow like weeds in their native habitat. Plant seeds just under the surface of a warm soil and water well. Germination will happen in a few days. Several perennial herbs grow for more than one season, including parsley, thyme, marjoram, sage, mint, and chives. Annual herbs include coriander, oregano, basil and dill. So try when possible, to begin annual herbs from the seed and perennial herbs from fairly young plants, however, parsley is advised to be grown on from a good quality seed. If you are hoping to grow your herbs totally from seed, purchase it from online seed companies or at your local garden supply stores. This ensures the quality of the seed, thus improving your chances to grow all of them successfully.

Some gardeners advise to plant the herbs outdoors and let them 'grow on' for a while, then moving them indoors before a frost, re-potting them to other containers. Once your herbs start to grow, pick them, even if you are not going to use them on a daily basis for cooking, as gathering them regularly encourages them to flourish, and you can dry them to store for later use, all-year-round. Dried herbs can last for up to a year, keeping the most of their full flavour.

Some herbs require sun, moving them onto a window ledge where sunlight will fall on them is sufficient, some herbs may require darkened glass pots, to help protect them against deterioration.

So, outdoors or indoors, herbs thrive in temperate areas, flavouring foods with their leaves and seeds and their aroma filling the kitchen, or wherever you set up your indoor herb garden, with aromatic essences, eliminating household cooking or smoking/pet odours. But best of all, you have the satisfaction of having your own home-grown supply of medicinal herbs, that can be taken alongside your conventional medicines. Also, think about taking herbs for preventative medicine, rather than waiting for your body to get sick. Lots of cultures around the world think of herbs as foods and take them with every meal, to prevent sickness.

Indoor seed starting update 2 weeks after planting seeds - 14 days later - growing plants

Indoor seed starting update 2 weeks after planting seeds - 14 days later - growing plants Video Clips. Duration : 5.17 Mins.

Indoor seed starting update: 2 weeks later So we are 2 weeks out from planting our seeds and will soon transfer these seedlings into the larger raised garden beds outside. For now all the plants are doing great and have all germinated and grown into very healthy looking herbs and vegetables. I plan on transplanting the tomatoes into cardboard toilet paper rolls as to let the stem of the tomato plants grow more roots - (the stem of a tomato will grow roots if you bury it, which make them stronger plants.) I plan on starting more seeds indoors about 2 weeks after planting these for successive crops. I will do this three times, which should let us eat well over a longer period of time.

The Secret Of Clumping Cat Litter

Before the latter half of the 1900's, cat litter boxes are filled with sand, soil, and plant shavings. But the obvious tiresome task of cleaning litter boxes using these materials had resulted into much disgust, if not abhorrence, from cat owners. So someone came out with using a type of litter box filling made up clay minerals that absorb water; thereby isolating cat wastes. But still, this clay material did not satisfy cat owners for long as it collects urine and fecal moisture at the bottom of the litter box, becoming a cesspool of bacteria that produce foul-smelling ammonia.

A few years before the turn of the century, scientists were able to come up with a new formulation of clay that clumps up when moisture or water is introduced to it. Called bentonite, this material allows wastes to be segregated and swept away. What's more, bentonite has some built-in odor neutralizing characteristics. With bentonite, urine and fecal moisture is absorbed by the clay and slowly allowed to evaporate into the air.

Catnip Plants

Today, a significant percentage of all cat litter boxes are filled with this highly absorptive litter that clumps cat's wastes. And clumping cat litter has become the trend for many cat owners. Clumping cat litters was an instant hit because it offers convenience and money savings. Cat owners do not have to deal with the foul smell of feline wastes and they are spared from constantly changing litter like in the old days of sand, soil, and plant shavings.

Instantly cleaned with zero effort and sweat, plus added with pleasing scents and deodorizers that give off a sense of a well-sanitized environment, super absorptive clumping cat litter became an overnight success story in the history of animal waste management. But all the sensation about clumping cat litter is now cast in doubt as more and more people have blamed it to have caused diseases and death to many cats.

As it turned out, bentonite has been discovered to function like cement or plumbing sealing material. And with water, it can even expand to almost twenty times its original size. As its size increases, bentonite can block not only cat's digestive system but also that of humans. It can even clog your sewage system.

Unsurprisingly, cat owners have observed a sharp increase in the number of cats suffering from immune system deficiency, respiratory ailments, and digestive problems in the past two decades since clumping cat litter has hit the mainstream market. Several owners have found out that cats that have ingested clumping cat litter have discharged stuff which when combined with water, turns into a gel.

Now picture yourself having a gel-like mass somewhere in your digestive tract. This substance will certainly cripple your digestive functions much less than your pet cat who visits the litter box everyday. Research show that clumping cat litter can build up on the walls of the cat's digestive organs; and when this happens, food can not be properly absorbed into the cat's system and elimination can not be properly done.

This results further into bacteria and other toxic matters accumulating inside your cat's body leading to other diseases like respiratory ailments and immune deficiency. Your pet will eventually have weaker disease-fighting mechanism which could ultimately lead to death.

So what do you do when your cat is suffering from an ailment that you suspect to be related to clumping cat litter? There are two things to remember when your cat becomes sick after you have just used clumping cat litter. First, simply take away the litter from the box. Second, plan a cleansing and home therapy regiment for your pet, like using curative herbs. It is best to consult a veterinarian to help your cat to recovery.

Clumping cat litter is sure to give you a convenient way of managing your cat's wastes, but are you willing to risk your pet's life for your comfort? Manufacturers of clumping cat litter have repeatedly denied the connection between their product and feline casualties, but are you willing to leave your pet's life up to chance? Indeed the only way to prevent your cat from becoming one of the statistics is to go back to the old ways of cat waste disposal. Sand, soil, and plant shavings used as litter may entail tedious cleaning routines; but at the very least, they are healthy for your cat.

Organic Recipes For Pest Control - 5 Organic Methods For Pest Control

If you pick a pest, you can usually find a natural counter for it, most often in the form of other insects. There are no reasons why you would need to use chemicals for your pest control, there are many very powerful methods that you can use. Here are five of them.

The first method is to attract beneficial insects with specific plants or to buy them from a catalogue. Brachonids, chalcids and ichneumon Wasps are good to get rid of leaf eating caterpillars. You can attract them with carrot plants, celery plants, parsley or caraway. The flowers form these plants attracts those wasps.

Catnip Plants

Ladybugs are very useful to your garden, as they consume aphids, mites, whiteflies and scale. They are usually attracted to daisies, tansy or yarrow. You can also purchase some in an online catalogue.

Lacewings are also aphid consumers, while their larvae will eat many other kinds of pests. Those insects are attracted to composite flowers, like goldenrod, yarrow and asters. You can also purchase them online. Hoverflies are pretty similar to the lacewings, as they eat mostly the same kind of pests and are attracted to the similar plants.

Another good insect is the praying mantis. These large insects have a pretty big appetite when it comes to garden pests. You can buy some praying mantis eggs online and set them in the garden, were they will hatch and prey on pests.

The second organic method that you can use is a special recipe using garlic. Yes stinking garlic can be used to repel pests. It is useful for controlling cabbageworm, leafhoppers, and whitefly. You can mix 3 garlic cloves with 2 teaspoon of vegetable oil and let it rest for 24 hours. After that you need to strain the liquid, then mix 1 teaspoon of dishwashing soap with 1 liter of water. Mix it well and spray it on the plants.

Next organic method is using some peppermint. Peppermint and other kinds of similar herbs, such as catnip and spearmint, are pretty good to get rid of your pests. You just need to mix it with apple cider vinegar in a spray bottle and start spraying. It will kill bug or make them go away and is pretty effective on a wide variety of pests.

For the fourth organic method you can use pepper. Pepper has a strong smell and bugs are not too keen on approaching an area that has pepper. The best concoction using pepper is to mix it with flour, then you can spray it around your garden.

Last method is similar to the garlic method, but will be using onions too. Here is the recipe: mix 4 onions, 2 cloves of garlic, 2 tablespoon of cayenne pepper with a quarter of water. Blend this well, then dilute 2 tablespoon of soap flakes with 2 liters of water. Mix everything together and blend it again. This will give you a potent pest spray and enough quantity to last a long time.

People Foods Your Cat Should Never Eat!

Today I want to tell you about some specific "people foods" your cat should never eat. As you know, some cats will beg you for food while you're trying to eat. It becomes very tempting to give our feline friends some of our human food. We have good intentions. We want our cats to taste what we're eating. We want our cats to be happy.

Sometimes, not very often, I will give my cats a tidbit of chicken or turkey from my plate. But, it's a practice I don't encourage doing on a regular basis. Why? Because cats need the nutrients specifically provided for them in good premium cat foods. Any "extras" that they consume will take away their appetites for their regular meals. A sliver of turkey or chicken from your dinner plate certainly won't kill your cat, but you're helping him or her develop bad habits.

Catnip Plants

The main reason I discourage feeding cats "people food" is that there are a number of foods that are toxic, or poisonous to cats. In other words, there are foods that can cause your cat serious injury or death. So be very careful when feeding your cat human food and table scraps. For example, the gravy or stuffing that you poured over your Thanksgiving turkey may have onions in it, among other things. For humans, that gravy or stuffing might taste great and it's harmless. But, did you know that onions are very toxic to cats.

The following is a list of foods that cats should never eat:

Onions, Garlic, & Related Root Vegetables

Onions contain a substance called N-propyl disulphide which destroys red blood cells in the cat. This causes a form of anemia called Heinz body anemia. Onions and onion products are not recommended for consumption by cats. Garlic contains a similar substance in a lesser amount.

Green Tomatoes, Green/Raw Potatoes

These foods are members of the Solanaceae family of plants. It's pronounced So·la·na·ce·ae. The Solanaceae family of plants is used by humans as an important source of food. These include the potato, the tomato, eggplant and chili peppers to name a few. Some of these plants are also used for spices and medicine. But, some of these plants are poisonous. In particular, the leaves and stems of the plant. So be careful!

Chocolate

This is one you probably already knew about. It's becoming more widely known than ever that chocolate is very toxic to both cats and dogs. What makes chocolate poisonous??? Chocolate is made from the fruit, or beans of the cacao tree. Theobromine, a component of chocolate, is the toxic compound in chocolate. Theobromine is poisonous to cats, dogs, and horses among others because they are unable to metabolize the chemical effectively.

Grapes and Raisins

No one is 100% sure why grapes and raisins can be harmful to cats and dogs. But, the ASPCA (American Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Animals) says: "As there are still many unknowns with the toxic potential of grapes and raisins, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center advises not giving grapes or raisins to pets in any amount." That's good enough for me.

Milk

I bet you're surprised by this one. Although milk is not toxic to cats, it may have harmful side-effects. Did you know that adult cats that are fed a nutritious diet don't need milk? It's true...and many cats are lactose-intolerant, which means that the lactose in milk and milk products can cause stomach upset, cramps and gassiness. If your cat really loves milk, a small amount of cream may be okay two or three times a week. The more fat in the milk, the less lactose.

Another solution is CatSip. Catsip is a product made from skim milk, with an enzyme added that helps the digestion of lactose. Catsip is available in supermarkets such as Safeway, Albertson's and A&P. It's also available at big pet-products stores, such as PetSmart and Petco.

These are the most common "people foods" that can be potentially harmful to cats. The bottom line is to feed your cat nutritious food developed with his or her needs in mind. Also, choose treats designed for cats instead of table scraps. If you think your cat has been poisoned contact your veterinarian or the ASPCA National Animal Poison Control Center at 1-888-426-4435. A fee may be billed to your credit card.

How to Easily Make Chemical Free Homemade Repellents

You do not have to worry about effectiveness of homemade repellents. These repellents are very effective and cause no side effects. You can use such repellents on your plants or in the garden and protect them from harmful effects of chemicals present in commercial repellents.

Simple Homemade Repellents

Catnip Plants

If ants are causing a nuisance in your kitchen shelves, place a cucumber peel to ward them off. The bitter the cucumber peel, the more effective it is as an ant repellent. Make a mixture of soapy water and fill it in any old spray bottle. Spraying it directly on the ants can dispel ants from your home. Sprinkle cinnamon around the areas ants normally come through. You would be soon free of ants. Planting peppermint around your house is a natural way of keeping away ants. Try any of these homemade repellents to get rid of ants in your house.

Pests normally invade your potted plants and your garden. Simple homemade repellents can get rid of all pests and keep your plants healthy and beautiful. Mix one-tablespoon liquid dishwashing soap with a cup of mineral or cooking oil. Mix three tablespoons of this mixture into a quart of clean water. Spray this to get rid of pests. Alternatively, marinate orange, lemon, or grapefruit rinds in water for few days and sprinkle this water on plants as effective pest repellents.

A natural way of getting rid of fleas is to place a wide and shallow pan of soapy water in the area infested with fleas. You should shine a lamp over the water and fleas would jump towards heat of the lamp and fall into the water. Fleas cannot jump out due to presence of soapy detergent. Other homemade repellents for fleas include applying cedar oil, lavender oil, and other herbal oils around ears and neck of your pets.

Mosquitoes are a common menace across any part of the world. Make use of simple homemade repellents to keep away mosquitoes. Catnip oil is very effective against mosquitoes. Apply the oil liberally on your hands and legs. Apply crushed basil leaves on your exposed areas and mosquitoes will stay away from you. Use Feverfew herb on your exposed skin and allow it to dry naturally. This protects you against mosquito bites. Crushed garlic is a very effective insecticide. Soak finely chopped garlic in an ounce of mineral oil for two days. Strain and add few drops of dishwashing liquid. Dilute this with water and spray on plants to keep away mosquitoes, as garlic is a natural pesticide against mosquito larvae.

All homemade repellents are free of chemicals and therefore do not cause any health problems. Mix one tablespoon of Dettol (also called parachlorometaxylenol, or PCMX) and four tablespoons of baby oil and apply on skin to keep off mosquitoes or other small flying insects. Mix a tablespoon of vanilla extract in a cup of water and apply to your skin as a mosquito repellent.

You can also keep a small quantity of this mixture in an open container. The smell of this liquid would keep away all flies, mosquitoes, and gnats. Rubbing little bit of plain alcohol on your hands and legs can keep you free of any insect bites.

Pette's Cat House Calamity, Begonia Discovery

Reno's, Office is populated by electrical engineers, auto cad technical support personal and they have been trying to grow Spectrum Begonias with marginal success.

Now in all fairness to the Reno office it's located on the 4th floor facing due west in northern Nevada which is approximately 4400' feet above sea level, in high desert geological bowl, air is thin, dry, hot during the day and cold at night with zero humidity; the only humidity in the office is large plastic pond the engineers filled with water, recycling water pump and gold fish; all of tropical plants begonia including leaf plant tropical are located around the pond for humidity.

Catnip Plants

Reno's senior cad operator went into office on Saturday to finish some design drawings that had to be expressed out that day. Gerald brought Pette his 25 pound, diabetic short haired, domestic yellow tabby in cat carrier Gerald had just taken him to the vet.

Gerald told us later the cat carrier was small and Pette is big; he released Pette to roam free in the office; evidently Pette was none to happy about his cat house incarceration; he bounded out of the cat house flying into ponds, spectrum begonias and large angel winged begonia, broke them in half and then tried to climb the weeping fig jumped up on desks with wet dripping paws, ran across computer keyboards dashed up one of room dividers; precariously balanced and draped himself over the divider went to sleep.

Gerald by then was in near state of hysteria he was terrified Pette had injured himself and everyone in the office would be upset about the begonia plants damage but Gerald being inventive soul; duct taped the angel winged begonia adjusted the stakes after he determined angel wing begonia wasn't broken just bent and placed all of the broken spectrum begonias in dirty office coffee cups filled with tap water finished his drawing, collected Pette and went home.

Gerald told us he wasn't looking forward to Monday's morning annoyed personnel; when he arrived Monday morning for work he was right everyone was upset but not about the spectrum begonias, plant damage.

They were angry about their coffee cups being impressed into begonia remedial therapeutic service and loss of Seamore one of their favorite twenty five cent goldfish; Pette had evidently indulged in one of his favorite pass time "Eating".

The Pette episode took place five weeks ago and all of the spectrum's are regenerating new roots; proudly sitting around the plastic pond in dirty coffee cups. The Reno office anticipates the spectrum begonias will be repotted when the roots are inch and half too, three inches long. Pette's cat house calamity turned out to be blessing in disguise; we discovered broken spectrum begonias can be resurrected even in Reno Nevada.

Early Epididymitis Treatment - Prevention For Further Complications

Acute epididymitis consists of pain, inflammation and swelling. This disease is characterized by longer history of discomfort with pain in testicle, epididymis and scrotum. People who are active in sexual activities aging 19 to 35 are the most prone in this disease. This may also occur on people who use anal intercourse. This is usually associated with urethitis. It may sound so serious but Epididymitis treatment is usually done without hospital confinement.

To facilitate epididymitis treatment, doctors and experts should conduct test to know if you have a simple infection or an acute epididymitis. Doctors can diagnose patients with this disease if the patient has pain and tenderness, unilateral testicular, palpable swelling and hydrcele. Though spermatic cord is generally swollen and tender, a testicular test must be considered.

Catnip Plants

Epididymitis treatment for gonorrhea is made by experts using the methods of microbiologic cure infection. This method is done to prevent the transmission of bacteria to others and to alleviate the graveness of the signs and symptoms that may lead to further complications.

Experts recommend their patients to have therapy by scrotal elevation and analgesics and bed rest until inflammation subsides. If this treatment fails, it is highly advised to ask the experts for examinations like tumor, infarction, TB, fungal, and testicular cancer test.

Epididymitis treatment can be very effective in preventing the spread infections. The therapy and the medication prescribe should be taken exactly and patients undergoing treatment should not drink alcoholic and caffeine beverages. Instead, they should eat fruits, whole grain cereals, nuts and laxative foods. You may also use soft stools and chairs and use a towel with ice bag to decrease swelling and pain. Regular and heavy activity should not be done until the infection is treated.

In some cases, if symptoms and infections can't be cured with a simple medication, surgical treatment may be necessary. This is usually performed by removing the inflamed part by scrotum incision. The procedure of bilateral vasectomy is performed to prevent sperm from passing through the epididymis and this usually heals with in a week or month.

Early diagnosis of Epididymitis means early Epididymitis treatment. If you see and feel any signs and symptoms of the said disease, immediately seek for medical advice. This disease may be easily treated but if not diagnosed early, the disease may lead to many further complications making it really hard to treat and the worse, impossible to cure.

Cats & Catnip!

Cats & Catnip! Video Clips. Duration : 9.03 Mins.

Because I love them so much, I think Skunky and King deserved a little treat! We went to Home Depot and found an actual plant, not that crumb stuff. Brought it home and sure enough, the cats went crazy over it. So this is what happens when cats get high. King is such a trouble maker :) He often likes to get high FAST like in three seconds, while Skunky takes his sweet old time because he's older and wiser. And NO I never "hit" my cats. The most I do is lightly tap them on the head to let them know they're doing something wrong or mean.
