Getting Buggy in Your Garden Patch? - See Herb Garden Plants That Double As Natural Bug Repellents

One of the major concerns for the herb gardener is how to protect plants from insects, plant diseases, and even animals such as deer from nibbling away at their prize herbs.

Companion plants are the natural bug repellents for the home herb garden. They not only aid other plants to grow better, but they deter insects, disease, and animals from eating anything in close proximity. In so doing, they protect your plants without you having to use expensive insecticides which enable you to stay organic. This is particularly important since much of what you grow you probably intend to eat.

Catnip Plants

There are many herbs and flowers that act as companion plants. While you can certainly experiment, start with plants that are native to your area that insects already recognize.

Some of the more popular companion plants used as natural bug repellents are:

Anise - attracts wasps that will devour aphids that attack nearby plants.

Basil - repels flies and mosquitoes.

Borage -- repels tomato hornworms, Japanese beetles, squash bugs, and cabbageworms, but attracts bees and wasps.

Catnip - repels mice, ants, aphids, flea beetles, and weevils.

Chives - drives away Japanese beetles and carrot rust fly.

Chyrsanthemums - kills root nematodes, and when flowering, repels Japanese beetles.

Coriander - repels aphids, spider mites, and potato beetle.

Dill - repels aphids and spider mites.

Elderberry - when made into a spray from the leaves, will kill aphids, carrot root fly, cucumber beetles, and peach tree borers.

Garlic - repels aphids.

Geranium - repels cabbage worms and Japanese beetles.

Hyssop - deters garden pests from cabbage and grapes.

Lavender - repels fleas and moths.

Mint - deters white cabbage moths, ants, rodents, flea beetles, fleas, and aphids.

Mole Plant - repels moles and mice.

Nasturtium - chases away the squash bug and whitefly.

Peppermint - repels white cabbage moths, aphids, and flea beetles.

Petunias - repels the asparagus beetle, leafhoppers, tomato worms, and Mexican bean beetles.

Radishes - deters cucumber beetles and rust flies.

Rue - will repel aphids, flies, slugs, snails, flea beetles, and Japanese beetles.

Soybeans - repels chinch bugs and Japanese beetles.

Thyme - deters cabbage worms.

Some of the herbs listed here can be made into teas and powders that can be applied directly on herb plants or soaked into the soil. However, we suggest that you consult a garden guide on this approach as some herbs can be toxic in this form and could hurt pets and children.

And finally, companion plants are compatible with some herb and vegetable plants, but not friendly with others. Research companion plants first before you plant and you will have a healthy and bug-free garden every season.

Plants That Repel Mosquitoes

Like mosquitoes? Well, like it or not in just a few months the pests will be returning fresh and ready to bite away at every human being they can reach.

That's why if you're in the process of early preparations for the upcoming season's garden consider planting a few selections that are known to repel the annoying insect. Not only will they ward off mosquitoes but doing so will prevent the use of chemicals which are terrible not only for the environment but harmful to people.

Catnip Plants

Now, it's interesting how the warding off works.

It seems to be that like people, insects stay away from things with scents they despise. When this occurs they tend to go the other way. Therefore, if you have certain plants growing close to the house near windows and doors there's a good chance it will put up an invisible screen in the path of your local mosquitoes.

Another way to use the plants is to make oils from them spreading it on your skin. Just remember some people have allergic reactions to various types of herbs and fruits so if you've never been exposed to some varieties, it's a good idea to try the oil in an isolated spot and see how it reacts.

Furthermore, unlike chemical repellents, natural repellents ware off much faster and need to be reapplied frequently, sometimes every half an hour to an hour.

A trick is to apply the oils to clothing or maybe even wear some of the branches or flowers from some species. If you try this, be cautious as some oils may stain so if you are worried about a particular layer, just like applying to skin try it out on an isolated section.

With regards to growing the plants realize some, like citronella, the top plant used for fighting off mosquitoes, grow in more tropical areas.

Other examples include the following:

Catnip
• Rosemary
• Marigolds
• Eucalyptus
• Cedar
• Peppermint

5 Fast-Growing Ground Cover Choices For Difficult Locations

There are times when any gardener needs a quick growing type plant for fast exterior of bare soil in beds or on a sloped bank. Possibly you have just started a new perennial bed, and would like a way to fill in the bare spots until the perennials have reached their mature growth. Or you have planted trees and need a ground cover that can tolerate the shade below its branches.

Catmint

Areas of bare ground can be transformed quite swiftly with a rug of low growing plants. Bare soil is a magnet for weeds, which if allowed, can become established and set seed very quickly. On banks, erosion is a more serious qoute from both wind and rain. Planting these spots with fast growing cover plants not only solves these two inherent problems, but makes areas more attractive.

Variegated periwinkle (Vinca major) is one of the best choices for a large area that needs a fast growing and vigorous ground cover. With its white and green perennial leaves and its pretty blue-violet flowers, it does need to be sited with care since it will spread very quickly. Long shoots grow almost overnight, and will re-root where they touch the soil. These hardy plants flower best with some sun, but will also grow well in shade where the variegated foliage adds a light touch. One warning - this can become invasive swiftly if not controlled.

Serbian bellflower (Campanula poscharskyana) is other good selection where a fast growing ground cover is required. With clusters of lavender-blue star shaped flowers, it shows well. This plant spreads by inexpressive runners, so should not be placed where it can overwhelm other less vigorous growing plants. You can assuredly chop off the outer sections of the clump with a spade.

Blue catmint (Nepeta faassenii) is the third selection for an fast growing easy-cover plant. It has aromatic foliage of small silvery gray leaves and sprays of pale lavender-blue flowers. It does prefer a sunny spot, but will tolerate some shade. This plant should be placed where it can sprawl over the edges of a raised bed or edge a path where its scent can be released as it is brushed against.

Prostrate junipers such as Blue rug (Juniperus squamata) are other good selection for ground covers. With spreading ground-hugging branches covered with silvery-blue needle-like leaves, this one looks good all year. It will grow in almost any conditions, and is particularly suitable for planting on banks and slopes.

Spreading roses (Rosa sp.) are very beneficial and attractive ways to cover large areas of ground. With masses of flowers, they form a prostrate rug that looks gorgeous most of the summer. The long prickly stems rapidly spread so plant these where you want to control soil erosion. Many of the new varieties of blanketing roses are problem free and very hardy. They look particularly good tumbling over a wall or trailing down a sloped spot. Many varieties are available, in colors fluctuating from white through pinks and peach to vivid reds.

Choose any of these five quick ground covers for soil stabilization, weed control or just for aesthetic motion in a difficult spot.

Seven Ways to Profit Growing Medicinal Herbs

Medicinal herbs are steadily gaining in popularity. As people adopt a more natural and healthy lifestyle, medicinal herbs are used more and more, and the demand for them is growing. Here are seven of the more popular medicinal herbs that could be a profitable addition to a herb growing business.

1. Calendula

Catnip Plants

Calendula's popularity dates back to King Henry VII of England who loved colored food. Calendula was used to season his meals. It also has many other benefits. In particular it is good for digestive health as well as for skin preparations. It can be made into a foot soak or bath herb. To get the most medicinal potency out of it, grow a variety with a high resin content, such as "Resina" found at Johnny's Seeds, a popular online source for medicinal herbs. Calendula is one of the easiest medicinal herbs to grow.

2. Lavender

Lavender has so many uses it's been called the "Swiss army knife" of herbs. In addition to the powerful fragrance (the essential oil in lavender is one of the top-ten most used in the fragrance industry), it has many medicinal values as well. These include women and children's health, skin care, nervous system conditions, and pain relief.

3. Marsh mallow

This versatile herb is useful for coughs or bronchitis. It can also help the digestive tract and various skin conditions. Turn it into a marsh mallow tea and you have something tasty and healthy for cold and flu season.

4. Catnip

You've probably heard of this one. It's primarily used as a stimulant on cats, but it can also be a soothing sedative for humans. It can also bring about pain and stress relief as well as helping with cold and flu symptoms. Something you might want to consider is making "cat-er-pillows." It's just like it sounds: a pillow filled with catnip. These popular items are very easy to put together. It's simply a mini-pillow made from fabric scraps. You throw in dried catnip, sew it shut, and you're done. These can be sold at street fairs, stores, church fundraisers, and more, and are proven sellers.

5. Lemon Verbena

Lemon verbena makes a delicious tea. It is used for digestive benefits as well as a calming and sleep aid. To get the most benefit, harvest the leaves right before you use them. In fact, lemon verbena is best propagated from softwood stem cuttings rather than from the seeds. Also, be sure to provide protection during the cold weather, as it is a tender plant.

6. St John's wort

You've probably heard of this one and might even know someone who swears by it. In addition to its popular usage as a mood-altering herb, it can serve as skin treatment, provide immune support, and provide prevention during cold and flu season. Be sure to wait until it's fully matured before harvest so you can get the maximum benefits of this popular herb.

7. Chamomile

Mmm, chamomile can make for a soothing tea. Like many other medicinal herbs, it has great digestive benefits. It can also be a calming and sleep aid. You'll want to grow the German variety as this will produce harvestable flowers in just over two months. The best time to grow them is early in the season as it tends to bolt in the hot summer.

These are just some of the profitable medicinal herbs available. Grow and sell these favorites and you'll be on your way to growing profits in the herb business.

Bulk Catnip And You

Buying Bulk Catnip

Catnip

Are you aware that your catnip needs can be of course met by buying bulk catnip? The economies of scale begin to work for you when buying in bulk as opposed to the lowly type, and you will be able to buy more for economy than with typical packet sizes.

With good storage, like in a cool dark place with a container with airtight seal, your catnip will keep fresh and qualified for a good long time. The simplicity of being able to order once instead of repeatedly will make it more suitable as well as save on unnecessary shipping charges. That adds up over the procedure of time!

Uses for Bulk Catnip

One of the best uses for bulk catnip is to donate it to your local vet or a pet security in the area. Both of these organizations have need of mollifying large numbers of felines who have surmise to be rather cranky, so you can do a good charitable deed by helping these groups who give so much of themselves to help the animal and human communities. It would be just a tiny thing to do but a big worthwhile deal to them. Give a tiny back to those in service to animal kind.

On a less humanitarian scale you can use it for production your own catnip cat toys. It's a uncomplicated task, to be sure, since the main concern is to have a car to contain the catnip long adequate for the cats to get to it. At the uncomplicated side of the spectrum are catnip filled cloth bags, and the complexity scales up from there. Might be an spirited side enterprise idea.

If you are enterprising and can passage the oil, then bulk catnip would be a good source of catnip sprays that can be used to freshen up your cat's toys but also keep in mind you could leverage catnip oil's insect repellent properties in the bargain. It's sure to be economy than Deet!

Dangers of Bulk Catnip

Well, you probably wouldn't want to be the mailman tasked with delivering your package! If it's not well packaged, he could be mauled by legions of neighborhood cats in the process of simply trying to do his job and get you your container by the appointed time.

Once your container has been delivered safely, you will want to make sure you obtain it well. Catnip should be kept in a dark and cool place. Ideally you would use an airtight container and place it in the freezer, or at least somewhere cool, and somewhere it will be safe from feline detection and thievery.

Good, high capability bulk catnip is very important. It wouldn't be good to find that instead of capability catnip you have a baggy full of stems, seeds, and leaves. They're not good for kitty digestion so you'll want to avoid this. A good victualer will sift the wheat from the chaff, production sure that the resulting bulk catnip is dried and sifted cautiously so as to provide only the most potent catnip. Don't buy stems and stalks!

Summary

If you want a good way to take care of all your catnip needs in a simple, convenient, and prudent package, bulk catnip is the way to go. From there you can fulfill your and your cats' catnip needs.

Deadly Indoor And Outdoor Plants Harmful To Dogs

Many dog owners don't consider that harmless little house and garden plants may be a potential source of danger to your dog or puppy. Usually poisonous plants are more deadly to small puppies, but some plants, even in small amounts, can be toxic to dogs of any size. By taking the time to understand the various plants and their levels of toxicity for dogs you can avoid costly vet bills and even more serious conditions.

Depending on the type of plant either the leaves, stems, bark, roots or fruit can be toxic. Some plants are only toxic at various times in their growth stage whereas others are always poisonous. For information on each type of plant the internet, your vet, or even a plant and gardening book is great resource.

Catnip Plants

Garden Plants

Believe it or not some of the most common garden plants are also the most deadly. Tomato plants, both the leaves and the stems, can be toxic to dogs. St. John's Wort, an herbal plant, is very toxic leading to vomiting and seizures. Other garden plants that can be problematic include:

· Apricot

· Avocado

· Black Cherry

· Black Walnuts

· Castor Beans

· Catnip

· Chokecherry

· Eggplant

· Garlic

· Mushrooms

· Mustard plants/greens

· Onion

· Peach

· Plum

· Potato

· Pokeweed

· Spinach

Fencing the garden area or monitoring if the dog is actually eating the plants within the garden is important. When in doubt completely isolating the garden from the area the dog is kept is a great idea.

Ornamental Outdoor Plants

Everyone loves to have their yard area looking great, but not at the expense of his or her animals becoming ill. Some of the showiest of the flowering plants are also the most deadly, including Oleander and many of the flowering shrubs. The list of the most common flowering and ornamental plants that are frequently found in gardens are:

· Amaryllis

· Baby's Breath

· Bird of Paradise

· Black Eyed Susan

· Bleeding Heart

· Bluebonnet

· Boston Ivy

· Calla Lilly

· Chrysanthemums

· Cyclamen

· Daffodil

· Daisy

· Elephant Ear

· Easter Lilly

· Ferns

· Flamingo plant

· Geranium

· Honeysuckle

· Hyacinth

· Hydrangea

· Ivy

· Jade plant

· Lantana

· Larkspur

· Marigolds

· Morning Glory

· Peony

· Primrose

· Rhododendron

· Tiger Lily

· Yucca

There are many other beautiful garden flower that can also be deadly, so be sure to check with the nursery or garden shop before planting them in the same area that you are planning on keeping your dog.

Indoor Plants

Many of the houseplants including ferns, dieffenbachia, pothos, ivy, philodendron, and even poinsettias are very toxic to dogs. Corn plant, peace lilies and any of the ornamental tobacco plants can be very dangerous for both full-grown dogs and puppies.

If you think that your dog may have consumed a poisonous or potentially poisonous plant immediately get them to the vet. Bring a small amount of the plant with you, including the leaf and the flower, to help with identification.

Cottage Garden Plants and Companion Herbs, What Are They?

When we think of romantic country gardens, a garden full of Cottage Garden Plants comes to mind. Many do not realize that many of these plants are also herbs and help each other grow and thrive. Cottage Garden Plants and companion herbs are synonymous.

The different properties of companion herbs turns the garden into an organic garden; one that doesn't require toxic pesticides.

Catnip Plants

What is a Cottage Garden?

These were the gardens of the commoners or poor in England and contained everything the family needed for food and medicinal use. Informal garden of a rambling nature that is interplanted with flowers, herbs, vegetables, berries, etc. All space is used and plants are crowed in together to form a living mulch and conserve moisture and cut down on weeding The beds are wide and paths are narrow

What are Cottage Garden Plants? (The flowers are also herbs)

Flowers: Asters, Baby's Breath, Bachelor's Buttons, Clematis, Cosmos, Dame's Rocket, Delphinium,Cranesbill Geranium, Hydrangea, Hollyhocks, Iris, Lady's Mantle, Lavateria, Marigolds, Nasturtiums, Pansies, Peony, Petunias, Phlox, Poppies, Roses, Sweet William, Violet, Wisteria, Zinnias Herbs: Artemisia, Artichokes, Basil, Bee Balm, Calendula, Catnip, Chamomile, Chives, Coral Bells, Cornflowers, Costmary, Daisy, Dandelions, Dianthus, Dill, Echinacea, Evening Primrose, Feverfew, Foxglove, Garlic, Lavender, Lemon Balm, Lovage, Oregano, Onions, Parsley, Peppers, Plantain, Rosemary, Sage, Sedum, Sunflowers,Thyme Fruit: Blueberries, Strawberries, Apple Trees, Peach Trees Cherry Trees Vegetables: Beans, Beets, Carrots, Eggplant, Loose leaf lettuce, Peas

What is a companion herb or plant?

Plants which release chemicals and help other plants grow and increase their productivity. Plants which help enrich the soil by providing nutrients and organic matter or pulling up nutrients from deep within the soil. Plants which provide shade or mulch for shorter plants and protect bare soil. Plants which prevent pest problems by repelling unwanted bugs Plants and herbs with the ability to attract beneficial insects, repel pest insects, and can even ward off weeds. Companion plantings combine more than one crop in a given area, so garden space is used efficiently.

How to create a Cottage Garden?

Create a bed that is wider than regular beds. No need for a designer. Create the bed to your liking. Plant Cottage Garden Plants and Companion Herbs closer together using all available space to help conserve moisture and cut down on weeding. Any paths should be narrow. Mix annuals in with perennials. Use lots of color. It should be brimming full of flowers, herbs, and vegetables. Add a bird bath and bird feeders. Place a bench where you can sit and enjoy its beauty. It should be inviting and bring pleasure and memories to everyone that looks at it.

Planting companion herbs takes a little know how, but it really isn't that hard to do if you plan out your garden, and know which herbs to use for what. You'll want to plant these in the spring, at the same time you would plant your vegetables and flowers. Knowing which ones to plant can eliminate the need to use toxic pesticides.

Cottage Garden Plants and Companion Herbs, What Are They?

Keeping Cats Out of the Garden - Cat Repellent Plants

Cats always use bare earth in which to do their toilet duties in the absence of cat litter. A cat wouldn't even notice a few sprouting seedlings you so carefully planted, but which they ruin with their claws as they dig them up as well as the dirt they use to cover over their crap.

If you having a problem with cats in your home vegetable garden consider buying some plants that are known cat repellents.

Catnip Plants

1. Curry Plant - This plant grows wild in the Mediterranean area (nothing more than a nuisance). This plant has a strong smell, but has no culinary uses at all. It is a frost tender perennial that is known to deter cats, who dislike the smell.

The curry plant is a member of the daisy family.

However, I would highly advise against planting this plant unless you have a severe problem with cats as it will just become another difficult weed to remove from your home vegetable garden long after the cats have left well alone.

On the other hand, this plant has some medicinal uses, one of them being soothing sunburn, and/or reducing inflammation and healing infections.

2. Scaredy-cat plant - coleus canina - unfortunately, this plant's name makes a mockery of the word scaredy. Truthfully, the plant does smell a bit of dog pee, which is just what every gardener wants in their garden isn't it?

It is supposed to deter both cats and dogs but this only works on those animals with a sense of smell.

Use this test to determine if this plant and the curry plant work: If catnip works on the cats that are visiting your vegetable garden, then both the curry plant and the scaredy-cat plant will work too.

A note to keep in mind: cats will just walk round these plants and go to another part of the garden, so if you want to protect young seedlings from being scratched up by cats, then you will want to plant a ring of cat deterrent plants around your growing area. Cats can jump over them (simple, right?).

3. Lavender - due to the fact that lavender can grow quite shrubby, plant them in a line as a deterrent to stop the cat wandering further into your vegetable garden.

Look for a tall growing variety to be the most effective against cats. Because cats are inquisitive creatures, but like the assurance of seeing what it is they are getting into, if you grow your lavender plants taller than a cat to block their line of sight you are on your way to success!

4. Rosemary - grows wild in the Mediterranean area and is useful in cooking.

This is a woody perennial, so it will re-grow each year after planting, and has a sweet fragrance.

The only problem with rosemary is that it really needs a warm and dry climate in which to thrive, and really dislikes cold, wet ground.

Based on this simple fact, you may be wiser to plant rosemary in containers so that this plant can be moved indoors when the weather changes.

5. Prickly bushes - cats will never attempt to squeeze through a prickly hedge, so if you plant perimeter hedging that has prickly leaves or thorns on their stems, you will succeed in keeping cats out of your home vegetable garden.

Some suggestions:

· Hawthorn - may be pruned into a dense hedge that will keep out cats and burglars.

· Wild Rose - forms a dense thicket when pruned into shape.

· Bramble - make sure it is not one of the new thorn less varieties. Brambles are almost impossible for either human or animal to pass with their thorny stems.

· Holly - forms an impenetrable hedge when planted close together.

· Prickly Currant - spreads easily, has thorny stems, and edible fruit.

· Pyracantha - likes sun or partial shade and can grow to form a dense barrier around your garden.

· Berberis - check for height and spread to find the perfect berberis for hedging or space-filling at the edge of your garden.

· Pampas grass - the leaf edges of the pampas grass are razor-sharp and act as a perfect cat deterrent.

· Blackthorn -- the vicious spines are one advantage and are a perfect cat deterrent.

If you don't feel like protecting your home vegetable garden with some of the suggestions mentioned here, plant plenty of catnip - cats are extremely attracted to catmint (catnip) which acts on their central nervous system like a feel-good drug, and then may become so mesmerized by this plant that they forget to go and dig up your seedlings.

Cat repellent plants work best as barriers to not allow cats in, but unfortunately the most determined cat will get past all barriers no matter what!

If you would like to deter cats away from a tree that may have a bird's nest in it, use citrus peel on the ground around the base of the tree - this works as my own cats have proven!

It may sound strange, but no matter how much you love your cats, you really don't want them in your home gardening plot. Are you willing to take action to keep cats out of your home vegetable garden?

Jungle Herb I Found in Jamaica

Dear health conscious Reader,

Catmint

I have the many job in the world. I get to trip nearby to different countries to find native systems of medical and customary medical herbs.

I've gone to Africa, Ecuador, Brazil - and I've been to Jamaica a half dozen times. It's one of my favorite places, because it's a treasure trove of herbs. Nearly every Jamaican house has a tradition of using them for medical since they were kids.

We're publishing a book from a customary herbalist there, Ivelyn Harris. I've visited Ivy at her mountain retreat. And she came to visit me here at my office last month. In her book, Ivy describes 42 herbs used in Jamaica.

Jamaicans have a habit of applying their own names to herbs. For example, "African Minty." (We call it kava.) Some citizen think kava's toxic to the liver. But I've never seen a case of anyone with a healthy liver who has had a qoute when they drink it as tea. I found African Minty growing alongside the road and on riverbanks throughout Jamaica. It's used roughly as a cure-all to relieve back pain, tension headache, bronchitis, and sore throat. In the U. S., African Minty - kava - is used to relieve anxiety, depression, and stress. It gives you a good night's sleep and helps you focus while the day. (1) Look for organically grown kava. You can find many organic suppliers at major health chains such as Whole Foods and Vitamin Shoppe.

Here's my Jamaican method you can use to make a tea to relieve tension headaches and stress:

Add 1 ounce fresh or dried leaves to 1 quart boiling water. Simmer fresh for 1 petite or dried for 3 minutes. Steep fresh for 5 minutes or dried for 10 minutes. Strain. Drink level or sweeten with honey to taste.

Take one cup of tea three times as needed.

To Your Good Health,

10 Facts About Bumblebees

1. There are 250 species of bumblebee worldwide.

Catmint

2. Estimates advise that the number of bumblebee species in lowland Britain have reduced in the middle of 50 and 70% since the 1950s.

3. Their family name is Bombus. One of my favourite Latin names is for the Great Yellow Bumblebee -Bombus distinguendus, closely followed by the Red-tailed Bumblebee - Bombus lapidarius.

4. The queen bee is the largest bumblebee followed by the female worker bee with the male (drone) bee being the smallest. Bumblebee workers can weigh in the middle of 0.04g and 0.60 g, whilst queens can weigh as much as 0.85g.

5. Depending on the species of bumblebee, worker bee's tongues can vary in size from 6mm to 12mm.

6. Bumblebees have four wings; the two rear wings are small and are ordinarily attached to the fore wings by a row of hooks called hamuli.

7. Bumblebees will pollinate flowers, fruit and vegetables in the garden, but furnish very small amounts of honey.

8. Bumblebees live in smaller groups than honey bees and do not tend to swarm.

9. Bumblebees will not die if they use their sting, whereas honey bees will. In fact drone bees do not have a sting.

10. A cuckoo bumblebee lays its eggs in another bumblebee's nest and leaves the workers of that nest to rear its young.
